Situated at an altitude of 960 metres above sea level, the hermitage stands, according to legend, on the site where the Saint's body was found. In the 13th century, immediately after the death of Sant'Amico, the first construction of the sanctuary took place. In 1623, Abbot Bernardino de Saavedra officially recognised the discovery of the body of St. Amadeus, thus giving rise to the church's official cult. The church dates back to the middle of the 17th century. It has a Greek cross plan and the presbytery is surmounted by a dome.

In Grottaglie's old square, Piazza Regina Margherita, stands the Mother Church, a true jewel of local architecture and a monument that bears witness to time.
