It's located on the left bank of the river Zeta, in the gentle Bjelopavlicka plain. It name comes from the word "foal", which in Slavic means "church property". The main church is dedicated to St. Archangel Michael and was built in 1818. on the foundations of an ancient temple.

The first protected area of Molise, in chronological order, extends to the slopes of the Monti Frentani, between the Matese massif and the Adriatic coast, entirely in the municipal territory of Casacalenda. The Lipu Oasis of Casacalenda occupies two thirds of the Casale Woods, a hilly oak wood that in ancient times hosted Hannibal's camp in the nearby Gerione.

Since 2019, the 1700s Palazzo Settanni houses the Educational Museum of Sacred Art of Rutigliano, on the most interesting stages of the area’s history and culture.
