Santuario Rupestre dello Spirito Santo

The Rupestrian Sanctuary of the Holy Spirit is an underground church dated between the 12th and 13th centuries. It stands on the side of an ancient riverbed, Lama Don Angelo, to the south-west of the town of Monopoli.

The rock sanctuary has a total surface area of approximately 458 square metres and is accessible via two perimeter roads.

From the outside, it is very difficult to notice the religious complex: all that can be seen is the rock formation that corresponds to the upper roof of the church, a flight of stairs carved into the rock that leads to the entrance and, on the opposite side, the external brick wall of one of the apses, facing the ravine.
