The Maria Santissima della Vetrana sanctuary is a religious complex that stands on one of the five hills of Castellana Grotte. It is a symbol of faith for the area, as it is related to the miracle of the venerated Madonna that, on 11th January 1691, saved Castellana from the plague.
The Sanctuary is therefore tied to an event connected to the centuries long devotion towards the Madonna, called “i Fanòve”, during which large piles of wood are burned around the entire town of Castellana Grotte, to reenact the miracle.
