Pulo di Altamura

The Pulo of Altamura is the largest karstic sinkhole in Puglia, originating from the collapse of underground cavities, which created an truly unique landscape.

The Pulo of Altamura has a karstic origin, owing to the collapse of underground cavities below. It has a perimeter of 1,800 metres and a depth of up to 95 metres, making it an unparalleled natural wonder in the area.

It is located in correspondence with a hydrographic basin into which two ravines flowed, creating over time one of the largest water absorption areas in the whole of Puglia. However, the continuous action of the water in the subsoil has weakened the cavities to such an extent that, even today, after millennia, they continue to slowly change.
