Lekursi Castle

The castle rises on the peak of the hill, about 1 km in southeast of Saranda, where one can check all the points of the horizon. It was built in 1537 and has a square shape, with parameters of 43-45 m with two round towers in the northwest and southeast angle and a square tower in the western wall. The castle is damaged and most of the walls have come down to our days at the height of 3-4 meters, except one part that reaches to 7 meters, that is the height of the second storey. The walls have been built by lime stones, nixed with mortar, enforced by strata that differ from the wall only by the thickness of a stone. The first storey formed a space with a diameter 8 meters, thickness of the walls 2 meters and covered by a round cupola. The first stories of the towers were linked to the yard of the castle and mostly have served as depots.  The second storey had small windows communicating to the passage of guards.

The western tower had a square shape, 3 meters thicker than the wall and has a width of 7 meters. The entrance of the castle was in the eastern side. Today, we can distinguish only its eastern side. Within the eastern wall, we can distinguish the contour of a church that that has been drawn in a late period. The castle could accommodate 200 soldiers. On the western slope of the hill, the ruins of the old village of Lekures, which is mention in the Turkish register of 1430-1432, can be noticed.   Based on the historical conditions and its project, the castle is thought to have been built during the period of invasion of Sultan Sulejman Kanuniu in 1537 in Corfu. Its main purpose was to control the harbor of Saranda and the road Saranda – Buthrotum. Actually the castle has been constructed and adopted for tourist use.
