The Kelcyre Gorge is a gorge in southern Albania created by the river Vjose, near the town of Kelcyre. This beautiful and uniqe place found along the Vjosa river, about 1 kilometres between two mountains. The area has many springs which flow to create extremely beautiful waterfalls along the gorge. There is a small residential center called Kelcyre when leaving this gorge. The origin of this city is from a small Illyrian village, dating back to the 5th Century BC. About 1 kilometre from Kelcyre, on the top of Dhembel mountain, Cave of Petranik is located; tha cave is 300 meters deep. This magnificent gorge lies between Kelcyre and Dragot with a length of 13 km, forms a deep canyon with a depth up to 1,000 meters. Along the river, tourists can admire many underground springs, including the Black Water of Kelcyre, which springs from the Vjosa River creating a variety of colors. The karst springs called the “Rrepet of Kelcyre,” which originate from underground rivers, are particularly beautiful, flowing from a height of about 80 m from the Vjosa to create magnificent waterfalls. It became famous during the Greco-Italian was ine world war II.
