It was built in the middle of the 19th century (1856.) on the site where during the Turkish rule of Herceg Novi, the largest mosque was located. It is a Catholic parish church built by the Venetian military leader Jeronim Korner, in a memory of the liberation of Herceg Novi from the Turks in 1687.
