The church was erected in 1636 and initially dedicated to St Mary of Carpignano. In 1663, the Confraternity of Saint Mary of the Angels was established, bringing together almost all the fishermen and farmers, who were later joined by craftsmen and artists.
The Confraternity is responsible for organising the processions of the Assumption, St. Andrew and St. Louis, and participates in the mystical procession of the Dead Christ and the Good Friday Mysteries, parading with the simulacrum of the Virgin of Sorrows.
