Specchia boasts one of the most charming old towns in Salento: named “Jewel of Italy” in 2013 and best emerging rural destination in Italy by the Eden Project in 2007.
The wide Piazza del Popolo is the beating heart of Specchia's historical centre, characterised by harmonious architecture, graceful courtyard houses and elegant aristocratic palaces, spread out in an intricate labyrinth of alleys, narrow streets, dry-stone walls and medieval-style stairways.
Specchia has been able to make the most of its architectural heritage and industrial archaeology, recovering the old underground oil mills and turning the old village into a characteristic diffuse hotel, one of the first in Italy.
