The Cathedral of St. Catald is located on the main axis of the island on which stands the Old Town of Taranto. Recent archaeological excavations have shown that the first building of worship in this area dates back to the 6th century BC and, after a series of alterations, at the end of the 11th century, the present cathedral with a basilica plan was built.
The evolution of the building did not stop there: between the 15th and 17th centuries, Renaissance and Baroque art broke through the construction of 16 chapels in the aisles and with the inclusion of works of art of various kinds. Unfortunately, there is almost no trace of all these transformations, because today we can see the building as it was restored in the 1950s, according to the ancient Romanesque structure.
