Castel del Monte

Castel del Monte is a masterpiece of medieval architecture, commissioned by Frederick II of Swabia in 1240. It has been a UNESCO heritage site since 1996.

Castel del Monte is one of the most brilliant and mysterious buildings in Italy. The number eight dominates the imposing castle: octagonal plan, at the corners of which eight towers are also octagonal; eight rooms on the ground floor and eight on the first floor, which are arranged around an octagonal courtyard. The number eight represents the union between heaven and earth, between God and man. Its function is still shrouded in mystery, although the most accredited hypothesis is the hunting lodge, an activity that Frederick II loved to practice with his falcon.
