Located near the city of Fier, the ancient city of Apollonia was one of the biggest cities in the Adriatic basin. It was founded by Greek colonists from Corinth and Corfu during the VI century B.C. Located on the fertile plain of Myzeqe and on the banks of river Vjosa which secured communication with the Adriatic, the economy of Apollonia developed rapidly and arts and architecture flourished. When, in the 6 century A.D., Apollonia started to decline due to the deviation of Vjosa, the population of the city had reached to more 60 thousand. Only 10% of ancient city ruins have been discovered to date.
