La Rocca di Oratino

The Fortress of Oratino is one of the most interesting examples of defense towers and sighting of the whole region.
Built on a rocky limestone outcrop, "u Pischie", sharp and inaccessible between the upper valley of Biferno and the country, its period of construction should be placed between the tenth and twelfth centuries, according to the Catalogus Baronum.
The tower is well preserved in its original materials, only 30% of the outer wall lost has been replaced, with interventions of recovery, by elements in brick that enrich the architecture.
The tower develops in height for about 15 meters, is built with ashlars of limestone in an irregular pattern, the outer surfaces show the holes that are arranged with regularity and in positions designed so as not to compromise the solidity of the structure. These holes had the function of inserting the axes of the scaffolding for the construction.
