Parco Nazionale del Matese Gallinola-Miletto-Mutria

The Matese massif marks the border, for more than 50 km, between Molise and Campania.
The highest peak is located in the municipality of Roccamandolfi, Mount Miletto 2050 m.s.l.m., the other important peaks are: Gallinola 1923 m.s.l.m. and Mount Mutria 1823 m.s.l.m..
From Matese are born several rivers (Biferno, Quirino, Tammaro, Callora, Lorda, Lete). They are present, besides, a lake of glacial origin (the lake of the Matese), and two artificial lakes (of Gallo Matese and of Letino).
Springs, streams and waterfalls, including the spectacular "Forra di San Nicola". Beautiful caves, among the longest in Italy, such as "Cul di Bove" (-906 m.), or the "Pozzo della Neve" (-1045 m.).
From the peaks of the Matese it is possible to have an extraordinary view of the "two seas" and the main peaks of the center-south.
The flora varies depending on the altitude: at medium altitude there is the beech tree and at high altitude the fir tree, while lower down there are birches, junipers, oaks and chestnuts. More to the south there are woods of holm oak.
The fauna is numerous and varied, you can see birds such as hawks, buzzards, owls and golden eagles, wild boar, foxes, hares, wild cats and for some time has reappeared even the Apennine wolf.
It is easy to come across, from spring to autumn, herds of cows and flocks of sheep (memory of the ancient transhumance) and horses grazing in the wild.
Along the tratturo Pescasseroli-Candela there are Samnite and Roman traces; the ancient Bojano, the fortifications of Civita and the Roman Saepinum, which has been standing for more than two thousand years and where life has never stopped.
The main tourist resort is Campitello Matese, renowned among winter sports lovers but also very popular in the summer by lovers of trekking. To visit the WWF oasis of Guardiaregia and Campochiaro for its particular natural environments, the waterfall of San Nicola and the beech forest with the three majestic "Tre Frati".
