Constructed during V-VI centuries the castle was the center of Skanderbeg’s rebellion against the Ottoman Empire. It has an elliptic shape of 804 m perimeter and the surrounded walls are fortified with 9 towers. Watching Tower is constructed north-east part, in the highest part of the castle. The function of the tower was observation and signalization of Petrela and Durres Castles. The castle fell in 1478 after the resistance of three sieges, ten years after the death of Gjergj Kastrioti. On the premises of the castle, there are the ruins of buildings from different periods and a few restaurants. Within the castle walls stands the Old Clock Tower, with the same bell that once rung to announce the death of Skanderbeg. Crafted by artisans of the Old Bazaar of Kruje it was important because once coordinated the city’s time: such as the opening and closing hours of the shops, as well as the times of prayer. Inside the castle visitors can find and see: the Bektashi Teqe of Dollme; National Skanderbeg Museum; the remains of the Faith Sultan Mehmet Mosque (with its minaret); an ethnographic museum and a Turkish bath. Today it is a center of tourism in Albania, and a source of inspiration to Albanians.
