The Kamenica Illyrian tumulus is the city of Korca is one of the most attractive burial places in the Balkans. The skeleton of an Illyrian women carrying a child’s skeleton in her womb (3 thousand years B.C), and the skeleton of a man in advanced age, have been unearthed there, adding to the value of this archaeological site. The tumulus is 74 x 40 meters in diameter and was dug out at the foot of a hill around 3 kilometers from Korca. After three years of the digging around 210 tumuli were excavated. This archaeological monument provides interesting data, as light is shed on the Illyrian inhabitants’ spiritual and material life, customs and rituals between the 10the and 8th centuries B.C.

In 2007 a stone bridge and a protecting wall in the southern part were built, followed by a canal dug in order to drain the waters. In addition green courtyards surround the tumulus and lime paths direct the visitors to the tumulus and to the museum. More than illustrating the death, however, the panels of the site museum inform about life, social relationships, technological achievements, cultural contacts and exchanges of this prehistoric community.
