The Umbra Forest is the largest deciduous forest formation in Italy and one of the largest in Europe. It covers an area of 10,500 hectares at an altitude of more than 800 metres, in the heart of the Gargano National Park. Due to its particular conformation, its beauty and its historical and cultural importance, since 7 July 2017 its ancient beech woods have been inscribed on the UNESCO List of World Natural Heritage Sites, as part of the transnational property 'Ancient primordial beeches of the Carpathians and other regions of Europe”.
