Concattedrale di Ruvo

The Co-Cathedral of Ruvo di Puglia, dedicated to Santa Maria Assunta, is the main religious building of the city, one of the most important examples of Apulian Romanesque.

The Co-Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta is located in the heart of the old town of Ruvo di Puglia. The current building is the result of a tormented and long construction process, begun in the 12th century and completed a century later.

The building presents a style that straddles the more mature Apulian Romanesque and the initial Gothic experimentations, visible especially in the sculptors of the portals.
The bell tower, detached from the Cathedral, is square; the side measures 6 meters, it is about 37 meters high and holds three bells of 18 tons. It was built around the year 1000 as a defensive tower: from this structure, in fact, it was possible to control the plain to the sea.
