The Basilica of Santa Caterina d'Alessandria was declared a national monument in 1870 and named a Pontifical Minor Basilica in 1992. It is one of the most exceptional monuments of Romanesque and Gothic Italian art, in the heart of the historic center of Galatina.
According to tradition, it was built by the will of Raimondello Orsini Del Balzo between 1369 and 1391, when Puglia was dominated by the Kingdom of Naples, and houses a relic of Santa Caterina, to which it is consecrated, yet another element that binds Puglia to the East.
