In the heart of the Ionian coast of Salento, facing the inlet of Porto Cesareo, a small archipelago emerges immersed in a crystal-clear sea. Small islands full of biodiversity, including a larger one called the Rabbit Island, the best known and most fascinating of this stretch of coastline.
In the past, it was common practice to use this strip of land for breeding livestock, necessary for the livelihood of the few local families, especially during the period of the two world wars. During the 1950s, a special initiative was promoted here to breed a small colony of rabbits in the wild, which the large island was named after.
Beyond the more folkloristic aspects, the small archipelago is a paradise rich in biodiversity, with Mediterranean scrub and small pine forests, soft white sand and seabed constituting a unique and fragile ecosystem worth attention and respect, within the only Protected Marine Area in Salento.
