Castello vecchio Fornelli

The castle of Fornelli is difficult to identify for those who expect to find the typical medieval manor. In this case the castle is a medieval village composed of individual "building cells", or houses and churches, enclosed by the walls. In case of an enemy attack, the moat that surrounded the walls allowed to protect the whole village. In the walls are still visible the seven towers built in the Norman period. The towers are in some cases attached to private homes, two are connected to the marquis palace, while in the central tower opens the main gateway to the village.

The marquis palace, inserted in this context, represents the embryonic "cell" around which the rest of the castle was formed. Being the most important building, the palace has developed as a "supercell", incorporating even the church.
Despite the fact that the palace includes other buildings in its structure, it has always maintained a unitary and homogeneous aspect, like a single structural volume. Only by carefully observing the doors, the windows and the roofs realized by the single owners on each cell, it is possible to realize the multiplicity of buildings of which the building is composed.
