It was built by King Uros I Nemanjic around 1252. and is dedicated to St. Archangel Michael.
From ancient times, the monastery has two handwritten gospels. One written 7066 (1558) in the time of Sultan Suleiman and second one chained with silver plates, was written in 1698 in Mountain Athos, by hieromonk Vasilije.
