The roots of Kotor as a settlement go back to the distant past. Probably the oldest, prehistoric settlement was in the village of Spiljari, in a deep gorge that separates the hill of St. John above the city from the mountains in the hinterland. Sources mention the "upper town", which refers to the oldest part of the settlement, at the top of the hill St. John, and “lower town”, which was ravaged by the Saracens in 841 and at the end of 10 century by Macedonian Emperor Samuel.
