St. George’s Church, dedicated to the city's patron saint, is an elegant Romanesque building made of stone. It is the oldest church in Campobasso, dating back to the 10th century, and stands on a temple dedicated to Hercules (Herculanea was a Samnite settlement on the Campobasso hill).
Originally with a single nave, in 1326 Nicola de Ferraguto, a nobleman of the town, had a Byzantine chapel added at his own expense.
Around 1428, the church was re-consecrated by Monsignor Baccari and the two side naves were added with various aristocratic chapels.
In 1700 further transformations led to the decoration of the interior with gilded stucco.
Around 1500, the University of Campobasso asked for a confraternity to be erected in St Leonard's in honour of the body of Christ so that the faithful could make the Corpus Christi day solemn.
The Church of San Giorgio was to become the centre of town life and experienced bitter struggles between two rival confraternities, the Crusaders and the Trinitarians.
