The village of Rocchetta Alta is a highly suggestive place, dominated by the ruins of the ancient castle and surrounded by houses abandoned in the mid-nineteenth century, walking through the alleys of the houses it seems that some of them are still waiting for the return of the ancient owners.
A first mention of the village is in 985, when the Abbot of San Vincenzo al Volturno, Roffredo, granted to a small number of people to live at the settlement of Baccaricia.
In 1980 an intense campaign of archaeological excavations allowed to reconstruct the history of the ancient fortified village, a first occupation of the site can be dated around the seventh century, as demonstrated by some findings at a structure identified as a farm. Several terraces built over the centuries, show how the human activity has been constant and functional to the enlargement of the village, the first terraces date back to the tenth century while the last are of the nineteenth century.
