It was inaugurated in 1896 with the idea of creating an organized space for a market where farmers from the surrounding countryside could display their goods. Originally it was called Piazza dei Commestibili. Built entirely with bricks, it has the shape of an "L". The inner perimeter is protected by arcades. The buildings that face you are low, of uniform height, deputies to accommodate stores and just, without overlapping residences.

Originally it was called Piazza dei Commestibili. Built entirely with bricks, it has the shape of an "L". The inner perimeter is protected by arcades. The buildings that face you are low, of uniform height, deputies to accommodate stores and just, without overlapping residences. It has two entrances closed by two iron gates: one placed along via Marconi, the other on via Palombo. In front of this last entrance there is a cast iron fountain, while on its right there is a rectangular shaped room that once was reserved to the fish market. In the first half of the 19th century, this latter place, enclosed by walls made of local stone, was used as a walkway for the prisoners imprisoned in the overhanging structure located on its right, not yet used as Government Palace. At present, under the porticoes there are a series of artisan stores.
