It is the largest lake on the Balkan Peninsula and Southeast Europe and is divided between Montenegro and Albania. The National Park was declared in 1983. the fourth Montenegrin national park. The total area of the park is consisted of 22,400 ha of water and 14,600 ha of peripheral land and wetlands.
