Torre Colimena

Torre Colimena is part of the Ionian coastal system of watchtowers, commissioned by Charles V in the 16th century to defend his kingdom from Saracen incursions.

Torre Colimena stands on a low cliff that stretches out into the sea near a small bay that originally offered refuge to boats. From its summit, visitors can admire the fusion of the blue of the sky and that of the Ionian Sea, which, on the horizon, almost blend together.

For centuries, this wild environment has been a generous source of precious resources, but it has also been afflicted by threats from afar, which led the Spanish viceroys to fortify the borders of the Kingdom of Naples with a defensive system that includes Torre Colimena.
