Theth National Park is located 70 km from Shkodra and it is near the midway point of the border with Montenegro. In the heart of the national park are Albanian Alps and the Shala Valley. The Albanian Alps are situated along the western Balkan peninsula and Albanian Alps mountains are characterized by steep, sharp rock-faced summits. They create striking landscapes. The Shala Valley is home to the Shale River meandering within the Albanian Alps. The mountain runoff feeds the river which flows south through the park.
Theth National Park covers an area of only 10.15 square miles (26.3 sq km) creating another small park within the country packed with astounding natural wonders. The area is characterized also by thick forests, meandering rivers, beautiful waterfalls, and striking rock formations. Beech trees cover almost 90 % of the part area providing shade for many different types of flowers such as the Wulfenia baldacci, discovered by the Italian botanist Baldacci. The park is distinguished by a highly diverse flora; within the park's land area has been recorded only 20 species of mammals. The characteristic dish of the area is fërlik (rotisserie).
Theth National Park offers several trail opportunities for exploring the rugged terrain. To be mentioned are Theth Waterfall Trail, Volbona Valley Trail, Grunas Waterfall and Canyon Trail and Maja Arapit (Great Wall) Trail.
Some of the most popular activities, include hiking, mountain climbing, skiing (especially on the eastern slope), even mountain biking and spelunking. The most popular hikes are the trek from Theth to Valbona Peak and to the hike to the Blue Eye of Theth, a pristine swimming hole in the mountains. Another not so popular hiking option is the hike to the Grunas Waterfall.
This park is important, protects biodiversity and differing ecosystems and also a variety of cultural and historical features investing in the heritage of the country. It has been recognized as a Protected Historic Center for the country as well as declared an Important Bird Area and an Important Plant Area by the IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature).
