The two beautiful lakes of Greater Prespa (In Albanian Prespa e Madhe), and Small Prespa (In Albanian Prespa e Vogel), have kept each other company for an impressive 5 million years. With a surface area of approximately 300km2, and staggering depths of 54m, the Great Lake of Prespa is shared across Albania, Greece, and Macedonia. The region therefore is particularly well-known for its fresh waters and sandy beaches! Based on their origin, they are divided into tectonic lakes and carstic lakes. They temperatures varying from up to 24 C in summer time and 0-4 C in winter time. Lake Prespa e Madhe is situated 25 kilometers north of Korca. Its shores are a combination of patches of sand and high rocks. Fish, including carp, eel and bleak, grow in the lakes at Prespa. Lake Prespa e Madhe offers abundant and transparent waters. Fishing in the Lakes at Prespa is both a hobby and a way of living. The lake shores feature a combination of patches of sand beaches and high rocks. Maligrad, the snake island which is a picturesque place that is home to the 14th century basilica ruins, is situated in the Albanian part of the lake, This basilica has been constructed within a rocky grotto and hosts Byzantine murals. The Lake is one of the pearls of the region.
