It was declared a national park in 1952. It has been on the World Natural Heritage List since 1980. with a part of the Tara canyon. On Durmitor there are more than 40 peaks higher than 2000m, while the lowest terrain is downstream from the mouth of Susica in Tara, where the altitude is about 515m.
