The Botteghe di Cartapesta (Papier-mâché workshops) are the artistic treasure chest of the ancient Putignano Carnival, the oldest carnival in Europe, which has been regularly celebrated for over six hundred years.

The Putignano Carnival is an extraordinary town festival of ancient origin that takes place every year in the streets of Putignano's centre. Its long history makes it the oldest carnival in Europe: it reached its 629th edition in 2023. Putignano’s carnival character is Farinella, named after the dish from Putignano.

Majestic carnival floats, made by skilful master papier-mâché artists, parade through the streets of the centre. Songs, dances and celebrations, all strictly in costume, enliven the village, with many participants.
