In 1552, the Castle of Monopoli was built as part of the coastal fortification system ordered by Charles V in Puglia. Surrounded by the sea on three sides, the fourth was protected by a moat, which no longer exists.
Its current appearance dates back to 1660, when the massive cylindrical tower was added and it changed from a purely defensive structure to a noble residence.
Redesigned several times over the ages and used as a prison in the early 20th century, the manor was restored around 1976 and today is the venue for important cultural events, contemporary art exhibitions and a stunning location for civil weddings.
