In ancient times, Risan was known as the most important city of Boka, so the entire Bay of Kotor was called Risan Bay. The first mention of the city is in Polybius, who in his book "History of the World" calls it Rhizon and mentions it in connection with the war of the Romans against Queen Teuta.
