Palazzo Ducale Larino

The Ducal Palace of Larino is the ancient castle built around 1100-1200 by the Norman counts, during the Lombard conquest of the peninsula. According to some scholars in this place stood an external fortification that served as a prison. It was situated near the Porta di Piano (via Cluenzio), that is near the main road axis of the village. Over time it has undergone many changes: from a simple structure passed to be a huge complex. It belonged to several important families of Larino among which Francia, Orsini, Carafa and De Sangro. In 1580 the Francia family bought the castle and it remained in their hands until 1663 when it was sold to the Carafa family. In 1683 the De Sangro family, the last feudal lords of Larino, took possession of the castle and transformed it into a residential palace.

The overhanging walls present the typical vegetation of a gorge with the presence of sparse shrubs and bushes on the bare rock.

Instituted with a Ministerial Decree in 1982, it is one of the rare cases in the national panorama, in that it includes municipal state land (about 268 hectares), the property of ecclesiastical institutions (about 11) and private citizens (about 273 hectares).
The Reserve is developed in altitude, it extends from an altitude of 640 m up to 1130 m.s.l.m. This aspect, according to some scholars, represents a link between the Mediterranean bioclimatic region and the temperate one and therefore it has favoured the development of a considerable variety of species of flowers typical of the Mediterranean scrub.

Oasi LIPU Casacalenda

The first protected area of Molise, in chronological order, extends to the slopes of the Monti Frentani, between the Matese massif and the Adriatic coast, entirely in the municipal territory of Casacalenda. The Lipu Oasis of Casacalenda occupies two thirds of the Casale Woods, a hilly oak wood that in ancient times hosted Hannibal's camp in the nearby Gerione.
